I think a lot of the girls and younger women today should take a look at this book. Everything isn't about designer clothes and the people you hang out with. It's about the people that love you. Book Title: Fancy Number of Pages: 189 Rating: 5 Fiction/Non-Fiction: Fiction Who would you recommend this book to? Friends and coworkers that are looking for a different read. What did you like most about this book? I liked the message behind the book. It really tells you that you should be yourself instead of the person you think that you should be. What did you like least about this book? It took a while to get used to the author's writing style but I didn't hate it at all. Any suggestions for how this book could have been better? I would have loved to see more of the best friend. I think that readers would have liked to see how their relationship would have been built just a little more. Reviewed by: T.P. Miller ******************************************************************************** I enjoyed reading “Fancy” by Vanna B. It was an excellent quick read. The main character, Fancy was initially shallow, but as you continue to read you grow to understand and think like her. I thought the story itself was not original, but nonetheless, entertaining. There were twists and turns that I didn't see coming and I also found myself laughing out loud occasionally. If/when I see Fancy 2, I will buy it to see how Fancy handles all the drama her old life created for her. Book Title: Fancy Number of Pages: 189 Rating: 4 Fiction/Non-Fiction: Fiction Who would you recommend this book to? My friends What did you like most about this book? What I liked most about this book is that while the author gave details, they were not used as filler like I see in many books. They were just enough to paint the picture of the scenes. What did you like least about this book? That it ended too quickly for me. Any suggestions for how this book could have been better? Not really. Reviewed by: Linda Gatson One man, three women, one crazy arrangement. A drama filled book that you will not be able to put down. The author catches the reader’s attention from the very first page. This book will leave you on the edge of your seat, curious to know what will happen next. Strap up, Ms. Gray is going to take you on a ride you do not want to miss! Book Title: The Arrangement Number of Pages: 418 Rating: 5 Fiction/Non-Fiction: Fiction Who would you recommend this book to? Friends, family, and coworkers who are looking for a great read What did you like most about this book? Phenomenal book! The author did an amazing job developing the storyline. What did you like least about this book? I did not like the ending. There was enough drama without the ladies having to result to those measures. I would have loved to see Portia grow more and calmed down. Any suggestions for how this book could have been better? I saw no errors; this was a phenomenal book. Great job Shay Gray! Reviewed by: Nadia McAllister ************************************* Initially I wanted to score "The Arrangement" a tad bit lower, due mainly to the lack of believability. I then realized there was something that made me continue reading. As an avid book reader and reviewer I would have purchased the book because the title peeked my interest. However, I would be leery about additional purchases. My overall impression is that it's a good book. Although it had some things I personally think need improving, I have already recommended it to several individuals. Book Title: The Arrangement Number of Pages: 418 Rating: 3 Fiction/Non-Fiction: Fiction Who would you recommend this book to? Young adults who enjoy urban fiction. What did you like most about this book? What I liked most was the language was extremely simple and easy to follow. My overall point of view is that it was entertaining. The book moves at a relaxing pace and at times is absorbing. You have no time to be bored because there is always something going on. What did you like least about this book? What I disliked was that much of the book was not believable at all. There were too many extreme twists and turns, and too many spoilers. The characters were not well developed. Example being Teyah & Terrance Jr. It was not enough character development to feel emotionally attached or feel a sense of sadness for them. Any suggestions for how this book could have been better? The author has great potential. My suggestions would be to cut down on the amount of characters in a novel. Even an avid reader will get overwhelmed with trying to bond with so many characters. Use your twists and spoilers sparingly and blow us away all of sudden. Take some of the characters in "The Arrangement" and expand on them in a second book. Reviewed by: Tonya Dallas I loved how Celeste turns into a modern day hero, even though she faces many challenges along the way. Nowadays, being a teen mom is portrayed in a negative light because of the reputation that teen moms receive due to hyped up TV shows (dealing with teen moms) and not actual real interaction with moms to see what motherhood is all about. It was nice to see the author not only shows Celeste as a real person, with real issues and the struggles motherhood can bring, but also focuses on Celeste's desire to better herself for her kids. She didn't give up her dreams merely because she had kids at a young age. Even though she had two kids early, she pushed herself and fulfilled her dreams by getting an education. This book is very motivating and goes to show that one should never give up on their dreams. Number of Pages: 128 Rating: 5 Fiction/Non-Fiction: Fiction Who would you recommend this book to? Teens/Adults What did you like most about this book? I liked reading a book with a character who overcomes things (such as teen pregnancy) with not only a great support system, but self-determination as well. What did you like least about this book? Nothing. I felt Christine Pauls did an outstanding job developing the characters and story line. It was well thought out and an enjoyable read. Any suggestions for how this book could have been better? None. Reviewed by: Candice Martin Terren kicks it up a notch in her book, “Love Changes,” the sequel to “Love Lessons.” With the same pure, fresh, and profanity free storytelling Terren delivered in her first book, Love Changes takes you on an exciting journey between two lovers amidst a whirlwind of trouble, temptation, tragedy, and truth that will leave your eyes wide open and your mouth at a loss for words. I was thoroughly impressed with the author’s ability to not only grab my attention and keep it but to leave me satisfied but still wanting more. I always enjoy reading a good love story, especially when it has a happy ending. Throughout this book, the author will have you expecting one thing to happen but gives you something you never even imagined. There’s nothing like a beautifully woven story that’s full of surprises. Rating 5 stars This book is the perfect read for anyone who enjoys clean, profanity free storytelling. It has a slow rhythm and pace that may be a thorn in the side to most readers who like their stories fast paced with heart-wrenching twists and turns. But I shimmied along and was able to appreciate the ride. Love Lessons is the type of book you pick up when you’re looking to escape from the chaotic realities of life into a world that’s relaxed, laid back, and conservative. It’s a beautifully written story between two lovers that makes you confront your own predispositions about love. Unlike many love stories that paint a pretty, picture-perfect view of love, Love Lessons gives you a reality check and love wake up call. It’s definitely worth checking out and make sure you follow up with the sequel because the love doesn’t stop here. Rating 5 stars. When I laid hands on my copy of “The Man-ual” by Andre J Carter, I was excited to see what advice he would bring to the table on relationships, but I was stopped in my tracks when I encountered the first problem: a formatting error. When I cracked open the book, I shot straight to the index as a guide to see where I would start reading and thought Chapter Three that talks about living with your partner before marriage would be perfect. So I thumbed to page 12, like the index says and there’s no Chapter 3. Instead there’s a half blank page with 6 lines of text sitting at the top. So I return to the Table of Contents to make sure I have the right page number and flip back to page 12 again, but still no Chapter 3. Then I look over to the next page (page 13) and low and behold, Chapter 3 is right there looking me dead in the face. Good! Finally, I thought. So, I began reading and figured so far so good until I got to the middle of the chapter which ironically sits on page 14 that says, “In the Bible days, men walked from country to country, but today, we have planes to fly. Times have changed and we must change with the times.” Really? Sure, this sounds politically correct, but what does this have to do with a couple living together before marriage? Does the fact that times have changed negate the truth of the scriptures and what the Lord says about fornication and shaking up? It appears that instead of presenting an objective, unbiased view about the subject matter that’s true and biblically correct, the author attempts to persuade the reader to accept his justification for why the act of living together before marriage is OK. Then it occurred to me that the book isn’t written in stone or necessarily a template for dating based on credible information, it’s a book that’s written from the author’s own personal experience with love which presents in and of itself, a biased point-of-view. After all, the “Man-ual” is a book written by a man for men so women you may want to steer clear of this one! Rating 4 stars There’s a difference between expressing emotion and using expletives just because you think it sounds good. And if there’s anything worse than a horribly written book, it’s one that’s chalk full of unnecessary “fuck you’s,” “shits,” and “bitches.” There’s an artistic approach and appropriate method for conveying an emotion such as anger to your readers and inserting four and five letter words whenever you can just because you can isn’t the right way for any writer who wants to be taken seriously should go. A great writer can connect with the mind and heart of their readers and uses various techniques within their creative geniuses to achieve that end goal. They don’t go hammer with the excessive use of four and five letter words. The idea of compiling 6 stories together that speak to the social issue of domestic violence is what attracted me to this book. But needless to say, after reading several stories, I was turned off. If you’re the type of reader who can look pass the mundane use of profanity and senseless repetitive verbiage, then maybe this book could benefit you. That’s if you can overlook an occasional spelling and punctuation error. I wasn’t impressed by this book because I expected more. The stories may be real, but are very short in length and do no justice for actual victims of domestic violence – which is most likely the author’s intended target audience. To be honest, this book sounds like a bunch of sob stories written by a bunch of bitter, tainted, and unhappy women. This book was missing several integral story layers that could’ve added a greater degree of sustenance and genuineness to the underlining messages within. The author should go for a rewrite because if I wasn’t impressed, I’m sure there are many other readers who won’t be either. Rating 2 stars GPA’s poems are short, sensual, and sweet. Sammie spends her childhood living with a racist grandma then is placed in the hands of her dope fiend mom and eventually becomes daddy's little girl. Her dad finds a new way of hustling that leads to lies, blackmail and even death. Sammie goes from the hushful, naive little patsy girl to a deranged girl with a gun strapped to her hip. Sammie will have you on the edge of your seat as she tells her tale of the many twists and turns in her life. At least that's what she says, or is she just blowing smoke? Peek into the book: I woke up finding that my room was pitch dark and so was outside. I couldn’t believe that I slept for the first time in a while without being haunted by Moe. It felt good to sleep without being, chased by a crazy naked bloody man. Rising up out the bed I opened my bedroom door, stepping out peeping into daddy’s room, he was sound asleep. I turned stepping back into my room tripping over my cell phone as I bent down picking it up. I remembered Brenee answering Moore’s phone. Something about me I couldn’t explain, my temper was all over the place. I stepped over to my nightstand flicking on the lamp light as I reached into my drawer retrieving my .22. I had a plan in my head and I couldn’t be stopped. I stepped into the kitchen, grabbing daddy’s keys as I disappeared out the door locking the door on my way out. I hated daddy’s car, but I needed to go and his car was the only way for me to get there. With that one driving lesson, I was hoping it paid off that night as I started up daddy’s car. I prayed deep down that he didn’t hear the loud wreck of his car. I parked two blocks from my destination as I placed my gun into the pocket of my jeans. Happy that I remembered the area and the right house I made my way up to the house as I stood outside the house looking up into the top floor rooms. I found a white vine fence that sat on the side of the house going up to the window that I believed to me my destination. I climbed up as I stepped into the window seeing I was in the right room. A figure lie in the bed with a white blanket pulled up coving the person’s head. I knew I was in the right room because of the décor and the pictures on the walls let me know. I noticed the clock that was on the nightstand read 3:47 a.m. I tipped toe over to the side of the bed as a pillow fell to the floor from the bed. I made sure that the person under the blanket didn’t see me as the person moved about under the blanket. I picked up the pillow and held it tightly in my left hand as I pulled out my gun holding it in my right hand. I moved in closer to the person in the bed as I whistled a little and said, “Hey, hey,” The person moved as she opened her eyes wide with a shocking expression. “Don’t say a fucking word,” I threaten placing the gun to Brenee’s head as she closed her mouth biting on her tongue. “You just can’t seem to get the picture Brenee. Moore isn’t yours anymore you messed that up so why you keep coming around?” Brenee licked her lips as she tried to speak, “Naw don’t say anything because you don’t have shit to say that I care to hear. I will keep you away from him for good though.” I placed the pillow over her face as I put the gun right over the pillow and shot Brenee two times in the head.
