Book Clubs What did you like most about this book? I like how the story flowed. There wasn't any slow parts as you read. I couldn't wait to start a new chapter. What did you like least about this book? Some of the chapters were too short. Any suggestions for how this book could have been better? As far as the story it was well written and held my attention throughout. The only suggestion I have for the author is to watch out for the short chapters. What was your overall impression of this book? My overall impression of The Knife in my Back was I thought it was a real attention grabbing story. I loved the characters. Brook was so sweet and caring which left her opened to the abuse Taneka gave her. If only she wasn't so trusting she could have seen through Taneka evil ways. Her man Eric was right in her corner and so was her friend Mia. I am just sorry Brook lost her parents so young. The book flowed so well and the characters just drew you in. I will read another story by this author. Reviewed by Janie De Coster (Timmonsville S.C)

Everybody needs to read this book What did you like most about this book? It gives you the truth about Aids and HIV and debunks all the stereotypes and lies. What did you like least about this book? There was nothing that I didn't like about this book. What was your overall impression of this book? I loved this book. It dealt with issues that we tend to snub our noses at. Many people tend to discriminate because of the unknown. There are so many half-truths and stereotypes given out regarding Aids/HIV. The author of this book does a great job in debunking those, and telling the truth. I loved the Kofi character, how he married and took care of Benta. Kofi experienced over and over again discrimination but he kept on going. Finally everybody needs to read this book!!!! Great Job!!!! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a historical story particularly race relations What did you like most about this book? This was a beautiful story that showcased a real life experience of the race relations in America from 1967. I truly loved the angle of the story to showcase the budding friendship between a white female, Lydia and a black male, Jackson based simply off an act of kindness. The story showcased the behaviors, mannerisms and attitudes of people during that era and how they had to strive to overcome racism with such humility, dignity and respect. The true account gave a realistic and believable view into a time that is rarely captured. The twist of the "perfect exchange" delivered two shocking factors that just continued to reel you into the story. The story as a whole was uplifting, motivating and encouraging. What did you like least about this book? What took away from the story were the amount of technical issues. It was not properly formatted. Paragraphs were not indented. Narrative and dialogue was mixed together in paragraphs which at times left it confusing as to which character was actually speaking. There were several misspellings, missing words and some incorrect verb tense usage. Any suggestions for how this book could have been better? As for the story, I wouldn't change any of it. The story in itself was very well put together, thought provoking and I truly loved it from beginning to end. My suggestion would be to have the author format it correctly and resubmit it to a different editor. This one did not do a good job at all. The very first sentence of the story had a missing word and it continued throughout this short story. What's concerning is that several of the errors could have been caught by simply reading it over at least once and doesn't seem as if that was done. What was your overall impression of this book? I actually give this story 3.5 stars. It would have been a 5 star read had it not been for the formatting and the amount of technical issues. Despite the errors, it is still a very enjoyable book. The story is a beautiful one that truly transports you back into the era of racism but displays such a wonderful account of uniting races throughout the extreme amount of adversities. I would truly recommend this book to anyone. But I strongly urge the author to address the technical issues and re-release it. I have always been a loveHER of words! My most earliest recollection of really being heavily involved with poetry was around eighth grade. Tell us about the very first poem you have ever written I was in my eight grade science class, and we were supposed to be working with a bunson burner, however I was heavily immersed in my journal notebook, writing a poem about my best friend's sister. It was entitled "Black Butterfly" and I just wanted to write her a poem of encouragement. Do you have a favorite poet? If so, who is he/she? Geesh...favorite poet. I don't think I can honestly answer that. I have been so influenced by so many writers/poets. If I had to name a few, Langston Hughes, Sonia Sanchez, Rane Arroyo. Just to name a few. When you’re writing poetry, do you think in terms of genre? No, not at all. I try to write with a detailed poetic eye. It's all about getting the words out on paper, and developing it from that point of release. Some people say writing poetry is like writing a rap or love song. Do you agree? Why/why not? For me writing is my means of communication, so there tends to be a lot more ease for me to choose that as a way to express myself. I do believe that there is a distinct connection between writing poetry and rap song or love song lyrics. There is a saying that goes, "Rap is just poetry put to a beat". Are there certain styles/techniques/rules of poetry you adhere to in your writing? Tell us about your writing style. Well I have actually studied poetry for a while now. My bachelors is in Creative Writing and I am currently getting my Master of Fine Arts in Poetry. From an academia standpoint I am consistently being stretched and challenged in my writing skills. We are encouraged to really study and read the work of other poets that capture our attention. For me, I don't really focus on the style or technique. I have been creating a lot of my latest poems based off the technique of emulation. My writing style is not set or concrete. I would definitely say that I'm still developing my aesthetics. What poetry books have you written? I am currently working on a chap book, but I have published a cd which contains my words spoken behind music. The album is entitled, "Penstrokes". Have you performed any of your poetry pieces on stage? If so, please share your experience(s) with us. I have been performing my work for almost ten years now. It has been such a beautiful experience. I recently performed at the "Backstage at The Lincoln" series at the historic Lincoln Theatre. I have performed at "The Signature: A Poetic Medley Show, as well for Stand Up Ohio SB5 Rally. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of love? It's a language. universal. infinite. and it heals ALL. Are you currently dating someone, married, or single? I am currently dating someone, but single until married- just being honest *smile* Do you think success is a matter of chance or a matter of choice? I believe that success is a matter of choice. Defining success for what works for you and what fulfills you. Inspiration for a new poem can come from the strangest places. What inspired you to write your most recent poem? My muse and my love for him... If you could go back and “right” any past wrong in your life, which one would it be and why? I try to live a life of no regret and to me there is no "right" or wrong...every step and decision that I have made on this journey has help shape and mold me into the woman who I am today. When you’re not writing, what are you doing? Listening to music. dancing. or dreaming of writing. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes of a poet’s life, fill us in on what one typical day for you is like. I am a full time mom of an 8 year old a 6 year old and a 1 year old. My day consist of laundry of some sort, dishes, cooking dinner, ripping and running all over town. Being super, pretty much. If you could create the “perfect day,” what would it be like? Prayer, meditation, and affirmations, when I wake up early. Then cook breakfast for my kids. Then go work out or walking. Get a massage. Then find a really serene place and write. What do you do on the weekends? Motherly duties! Do you hang out or go to clubs? Occasionally but not often If you could visit any other country in the world and take one other person with you, where would you go and who would you take? Jamaica and my best friend Ashley...which we are actually doing for our 30th birthday's in 2014! Tell us about one challenge in life that you had to overcome. What was the challenge and how did you get through it? Fear of not being good enough and almost talking myself out of doing a show that changed my career for the better. I just pressed through the illusion of fear and reminded myself that I would not have been selected if people didn't believe in my ability to perform well. Before you leave, tell us one thing about yourself that we may not know. My grandfather was a chief from a small tribe in Ghana, West Africa. What’s your website? www.nakispeaks.com Facebook? In addition to being a self-published author, she’s also a wife of 15 years, mother of 2 and native of Memphis, TN. She comes from a huge family and has always been the go to girl whenever someone needed a poem written or read, an acknowledgement that would convey just what they were thinking or even an occasion written for that special day. She’s an all-around talented lady that makes everything she touch turn to gold. She has 2 degrees from Southwest TN Community College both in Information Technology and has worked in the corporate field for over 15 years. She is also a dedicated blogger, delivering a devotional blog 5 days per week entitled ”Kisha’s Daily Devotionals.”
LaKisha wants readers of her books to step outside the box and read with imagination. She wants them reeled in from the front cover to the last word, enjoying every second in between, asking for more. She doesn’t proclaim to be the best writer or even author in the world..she just proclaims to be blessed because her motto is ”God’s purpose is bigger than any problem!” About her book, Shelby is a career woman turned housewife who enjoys the friendships that have been built with her 5 best friends; Camille, Lynesha, Raylin, Kerri and Chloe. They are all career women with different businesses, husbands and even children but something is missing and they can’t seem to find it at home, in a store or even in a book. So, they search for this missing piece in the beds, arms, cars and even offices of other men who don’t mind paying for what Dem Dam Divas can offer. They enjoy the thrill of sneaking, creeping and even vacationing on someone else’s dime but they soon find out that all good things come to an end. What happens when it becomes too much? From secretly wanting someone who doesn’t want you, loving only to not be loved back and being caught up in a dream that you’re about to be awaken from; will it be worth it in the end? Will they regret their actions or stand by them? Will they finally question whether this secret is really worth keeping? When did you first decide you wanted to become an author? I never actually decided but I finally realized, it was destined for me. See, I started out writing posts on my Facebook page (just my thoughts) and on the days I would miss posting something, I would get an inbox message asking for them which is what led to my devotional blog and eventually my devotional book. After the devotional book, which I self-published, I never thought I would write a fiction book but it happened and I couldn't be more excited. How did you decide on the idea for your 1st book? 2nd book? 3rd book, etc? My first book, Doses of Devotion, came from my devotional blog. I took some of the devotionals I had originally posted and turned them into a book of encouragement for those who may need it. My second book, A Secret Worth Keeping, was actually a spur of the moment thing, as I never planned to write this type of book, but sitting at home one night looking at pictures I had recently taken at our girls night out and the idea popped into my head. I started writing and the rest is history. How long did it take you to complete your first book? What was the process like? My first book didn't take long at all because I was writing about God and encouragement and it was easy because I truly believe that God has given me an amazing gift and I just happen to share it with others by writing it down. The first thing I had to do was create an outline that would allow the book to flow. I also had to study a lot because I can never write about something I don't know about because then I would be lying. The next step was putting it all together, proofing it and finally self-publishing it. What’s so rewarding about writing books and being an author? To me, it's the fact that people are reading and sharing your work (and some even love it). I enjoy writing because I use it as an escape to share my thoughts. My devotionals are used to share my understanding of God's word and my fiction writing is my imagination living on the wild side. Was there ever a time you felt like giving up? I can honestly say no because giving up is waving the white flag in defeat and I shall not be defeated. If I give up then those who think I can't make it win. If I give up, those who wish I would fall, win. If I give up then I show my children, my nieces and nephews and all those who encourage me daily that giving up and giving in is easier than going on and I cannot do that. Are there times when it gets hard? Yes but I push through it because I have too. I have a family that depends on me and I have to keep going for that one person who is thinking about stepping out on faith. There’s more to being an author than writing a book. How do you manage to handle the business side of things? With a lot of prayer, faith, family and friends. Writing is only one step because after you've written the words you have to then do the work to get it noticed. For my fiction book, I have a publisher so I have help on the business side but there is still a lot to manage and I am thankful to have a wonderful support system in my family. Do you have an editor or do you edit your own books? For my devotional book, I along with my sister edited it. For my fiction book, it was edited through the publishing company, Delphine Publications. Who does the cover art for your book(s)? For the devotional book, I used Createspace through Amazon and for A Secret Worth Keeping, it was the pubishing company. Do you ever encounter writer’s block? How do you get past it? I wouldn't call it writers block but starting on part 2 of A Secret Worth Keeping, I've been stuck on the first few chapters, reading them over and over because I want part 2 to be greater than part 1. I'm not stuck on what I want to write but I'm being extra hard on myself because I want to ensure it gives the readers what they want and ask for. How often do you write? Everyday. I write my devotional blog on wordpress and I try to write a few pages, a day, on the fiction book. Tell us about your last book signing. My last book signing was actually my book release party for A Secret Worth Keeping and it was amazing. The turnout was way more than I could have ever expected. The place was filled with family and friends and even a few new faces I met and it was great. Beside social media, what other methods are you using to get the word out about your book(s)? I utilize a lot of blogs, other websites who feature authors and promo blitzes through book clubs. I also use the internet to search other ways to promote, I email book stores, magazines and radio stations. If there is a way to promote, I try to find it. As a Woman of Color, what inspires you the most? My faith. I say that because the bible tells me in Hebrews, 11:1 that my faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. So, I am inspired by the fact that as long as I have hope in the things that I ask of God then there is a possibility they can come to pass. Who is your biggest influence? My biggest influences are my grandmother who still encourages me, to this day. My mom who raised 7 children as a single parent yet she endured and never gave up. My sister who has been fighting a terrible disease (Trigeminal Neuralgia) yet even through unbearable pain she encourages others. My husband and children who are always there even while I ignore them when I'm writing. And all those, family and friends who encourage and push me to go on. Have you ever done something in the past you regret? How did you get through it? I don't have regrets simply mistakes that I've learned from and yes there have been a few but they have made me the strong, determined woman I am today. How do you get through the tough times in life when life throws what it throws at you? By understanding that nothing last. I've had my share of tough times and I'm still having some but they can't last. So, I pray and I even encourage myself because no matter how tough my problem gets, it's no match for my purpose. What is one goal you want to accomplish for yourself in 2013? One goal that I've set to accomplish for 2014 is completing part 2 of A Secret Worth Keeping as well as a devotional book for Youth and Young Adults. What do you have planned next? I plan on visiting a few book festivals, meeting with book clubs and finishing up part 2 of A Secret Worth Keeping. How can readers and others in the literary community reach you? I can be reached on all social media and via email. Facebook - KishaDJohnson Instagram - kishajohnson Twitter - _lakishajohnson Email - [email protected] And on my blogs kishasdailydevotional.wordpress.com and [email protected] Writing this book/series has been a dream come true to me. It has been an exciting and satisfying journey all because of God and my awesome support system. I feel so grateful to be able to finally do what I absolutely love. I have far too many people who have encouraged and inspired me to name one by one, but each and every one of you know how much I love and appreciate you. It's more than words can even describe. I hope that each of you enjoy my series as much as I enjoyed writing them. Thanks so much for taking a chance on me. Enjoy and be blessed!!
