Ebonee’ Oliver-Abby is 28 years old and a mother of two boys, Sha’Kwan & K’Shaun. She was born in New York and raised in Georgia, and is the oldest of eleven children. Although she has an Associate’s Degree in General Studies and a certificate in Medical Billing & Coding, she admits, “Writing has always been my guilty pleasure.”
On May 20, 2010, following the birth of her youngest child, she was diagnosed with SLE also known as Lupus.
Ebonee was later diagnosed with Discoid Lupus (Skin Lupus), Fibromyalgia, Fibrosis, Hypotension, Hypothyroids, Cricoarytenoiditis (Lupus in the voice box) and Severe Depression. Her psychiatrist suggested writing a diary, but she learned quickly that poetry came a lot easier to her. With her everyday life being so challenging, she needed an easier outlet to keep her standing strong. The more she wrote and the more people read her writing, the more she felt inclined to share it. As a result, she took to writing her first book, Still Standing.
Ebonee emphatically states, “I have been cut, poked and jabbed multiple times. I have stayed in the hospital for several days on end. I am on a first name basis with the emergency room staff since I frequent the department at least twice a month. I have had more x-rays, CT scans, surgeries and blood work performed than I can count. I am Still Standing.”
It is only by God’s grace that he has spared her from death more than one person deserves; it is a miracle she is still here.
Still Standing is a book of poetry about Ebonee, her life and her fight for survival. It also depicts situations she has witnessed and encountered with others. Most people have no idea what Lupus is or the impact it has on a person’s life. Ebonee wants to raise awareness on this debilitating disease. She wants people to understand it is not easy feeling like something controls your life more than you do.
“God always shines a light at the end of the tunnel. It is up to you to follow the path blindfolded.” –Ebonee Abby
Her second book, entitled Affectionately 360 is slated for release on September 25, 2013
